Mangalitsa Hogs

Mangalica, Mangalitsa, or Mangalitza are a Hungarian heritage breed. All three spellings are correct depending on where in the world you are. The American spelling is Mangalitsa. In Hungary the spelling is Mangalica.

They produce a flavorful meat that is well marbled. The lard they produce has less saturated fat and less cholesterol than butter.  It has more unsaturated fat than butter.

Males weigh 150 to 170 lbs and females weigh 140 to 160 lbs. They have rough curly wool like hair on their bodies. The hair is shed seasonally. The hair is usually longer and denser in the colder months and shorter in the warmer ones.

There are currently only three varieties, Blonde, Red, and Swallow-bellied. Blonde makes up over 60% of the world population of Mangalitsa.

Eli is the boar. The gilts are named Joy and Ivy.
